Police investigating explicit Snapchat messages sent to school children

Police are investigating reports of a man sending explicit messages to school pupils over Snapchat.

A warning was sent to parents and carers from the Range High School in Formby after concerns were raised about a man messaging a large number of pupils over Snapchat.

The ECHO understands Sefton Council has forwarded the alert to parents with children at other schools in the Sefton area. Merseyside Police has today confirmed officers are investigating reports of sex offences in Formby.

A police spokesperson said: "On Thursday 18 May we received a report that a male had been sending explicit social media messages to students from a school in the area.

"The school and parents of the students are aware of the incident and police enquiries are ongoing."

The alert sent to parents and seen by the ECHO reads: "There is an adult male that has made contact with a large number of our pupils across the school, but particularly in Year 8 over Snapchat.

"Looking at the messages, he has been grooming the pupils and over the last 24 hours has sent a small number of pupils sexually explicit photographs.

"We have sent a notification to parents to make them aware of this threat. The police have already been informed by a parent but the young people at school tell me that friends they have in other schools also know this man."

A spokesperson for Sefton Council said: "We regularly send messages to our school community to make parents, children and staff aware of any reports we have received to ensure our school community are informed and kept safe."
