Police investigating deliberate fire outside boxing club in Johnstone

Police are appealing for witnesses after a deliberate fire in Johnstone town centre early this morning.

Emergency services were called to a report of a fire on MacDowall Street in the town at 12.55am on Friday morning.

Renfrewshire Live understands the fire was at the door of Saltire Boxing Gym, which is the home of Renfrewshire Boxing.

No-one was injured as a result of the blaze.

Colin Bellshaw from Renfrewshire Boxing said: “The fire was at the outside door. I understand there wasn’t too much damage to the club and we’ve had guys back in there.

“It was dealt with fairly quickly.”

Police are examining nearby CCTV footage and appealing for anyone who saw anything suspicious to get in touch.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 12.55am on Friday, 27 May, 2022, emergency services were called to a report of a fire at a premises in MacDowall Street, Johnstone.

“No one was injured.

“The fire is being treated as wilful and enquiries are ongoing.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting ref 0139 of Friday, May 27.”
