GEORGE Osborne has alerted the police to a “distressing campaign of harassment” after an e-mail was sent to his friends, family and journalists which made a series of claims about his personal life.
The former chancellor is marrying his one-time adviser and ex-BBC producer Thea Rogers in Somerset on Saturday.
However, Osborne’s friends say the e-mail – which was sent out on Thursday and has since been posted online – is part of a “long-term campaign” being waged against the couple.
It is believed that both Osborne and Rogers know the identity of the person who sent the e-mail.
Although, sources told the Daily Telegraph that they have “no connection” to the couple and their motivations are unclear.
Police are said to have been investigating the alleged harassment “for some time”.
After leaving parliament in 2016, Osborne later served as editor-in-chief at the Evening Standard.
However, he has since left this role to join financial consultants Robey Warshaw.
Many political figures are expected to attend the wedding, including David Cameron, Michael Gove and former BBC journalist and News Agents podcast presenter Jon Sopel.
Sopel, who worked with Rogers while employed at the BBC’s Paris bureau, is expected to make a short speech at the event.
