Police investigating allegations of 'blackmail' with Alison Hammond handing over 'thousands of pounds'

Police have said they are taking accusations of blackmail "very seriously" after Alison Hammond was forced to hand over "thousands".

It comes as West Midlands Police today confirmed that they were investigating allegations involving a woman in her 40's. This comes after reports that Alison Hammond was being blackmailed.

Her co-stars took to social media to write messages of support for the presenter, reports the Mirror.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: "We are investigating an allegation of blackmail of a woman in her 40's. We take reports of this kind very seriously and our enquiries are progressing swiftly."

It comes after an insider told The Sun that someone who Alison believed to be a friend allegedly said that he would "tell lies" which would "end her career" unless the presenter handed over thousands of pounds.

The presenter is said to have purchased a BMW car, worth an estimated £5,000, for the man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons.

The source claimed that Alison said: "Out of the blue he said he could tell lies to make people think less of me, it was alarming."

Alison has continued to appear on television during the alleged ordeal, and colleagues have since shared messages of support.

Matthew Wright - who is often a guest on This Morning's paper review - wrote on Twitter: "Sending @AlisonHammond a hug xx."
