Homicide detectives will investigate the death of a woman found in Melbourne’s Maribyrnong River after two bodies were discovered on Sunday.

A member of the public spotted the body of a man near Saltriver Place in Footscray at about 9am on Sunday. About 90 minutes later, a passerby noticed the body of a woman near Smithfield Road in Flemington.

Victoria police on Monday afternoon said the woman’s death was being treated as suspicious. Investigators were working to identify the man but said early inquiries suggested his death was not suspicious.

Police said there was nothing to link the death of the woman to that of the man whose body was also located on the river.

“We are still in the process of speaking to next of kin,” a police statement said.

The man who reportedly discovered the woman’s body claimed she had a bag tied over her head, while her legs were wrapped in plastic.
