Police investigate blaze at caravan site that belonged to killer Luke Mitchell's mum

Police Scotland have opened enquiries into a fire at the former caravan storage site of Corinne Mitchell, mother of convicted Midlothian killer Luke Mitchell.

Mitchell was convicted of killing Jodi Jones in 2003. He was ordered to serve at least 20 years in prison despite insisting he is innocent throughout court proceedings and his entire spell behind bars.

Formerly Scott's Caravans, the site is situated at Mayfield Industrial Estate - next to a Shell garage - and it is understood to have become abandoned and derelict overtime.

Last night locals had recorded footage of a massive blaze that had engulfed a shed building at the site.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service had sent five appliances to tackle the inferno which burned for a number of hours on the evening of Friday March 17.

In 2021, Corinne Mitchell told a Channel 5 documentary - ‘Murder in a Small Town’ - that she was forced out of her family home and had lived at the old caravan site for six years.

She added at the time that following Luke's conviction, 40 caravans within the park were destroyed. She described the scenes as "utter carnage" after the police asked her to go out to the site at 3am.

Pictures shared with Edinburgh Live last night show flames that could be seen rising into the dark night sky as the fire raged on throughout the night with locals becoming concerned at the proximity of the fire to the nearby Shell petrol garage.

On the incident, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We were called to a report of a fire at a disused building on Mayfield Road, Dalkeith around 7.20pm on Friday, 17 March, 2023.

“The road was closed but was later reopened. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Last night local Chris Keppie heralded the work of brave firefighters who were able to extinguish the fire after battling the flames for several hours.

Edinburgh Live has previously reported that in order for Luke Mitchell to qualify for release in 2025, he would have to plead guilty to the brutal murder in front of the parole board. Luke was just 14 when accused of the murder of Jodi Jones after her body was found in a woodland area near Dalkeith.
