Police investigate after man dies in hospital after Berwick hit-and-run

A man has died in hospital after being found injured after a suspected hit-and-run in Melbourne's south-east.

Police say the 44-year-old man was found injured in a Berwick gutter just after midnight after a passenger in a rideshare vehicle spotted him.

The man was found with life-threatening injuries on the side of the Princes Highway, between Neill and Peel streets.

Police are investigating and say they believe a black BMW sedan struck the man.

They said the car involved would likely have extensive damage to the passenger-side front wheel arch and front lights.

Anyone with information or dash cam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Meanwhile, officers are also looking into the circumstances of a Werribee house fire that took place overnight, with two men found dead this morning.

Emergency services were called to a two-storey unit just after 7am.

A third man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police are still investigating the cause of the blaze.
