Police investigate after driver was 'threatened and followed' by another vehicle in Sunderland

Police are investigating after a driver was threatened and chased by another vehicle in Sunderland.

Officers from Northumbria Police were called to the Hendon Road area of the city at 12.12pm on Tuesday.

They stopped two vehicles coming out of St Mary's car park near the Echo 24 building.

The incident caused significant traffic disruption for other drivers in the area including on Wearmouth Bridge.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson confirmed a driver had been threatened by those in the other vehicle involved in the chase.

They said: “At 12.24pm on Tuesday we received a report of a disturbance involving two vehicles in the Hendon Road area of Sunderland.

“It was reported that one driver had been threatened and followed by occupants of another vehicle who were not known to him. The victim pulled over and managed to get away from the occupants."

The spokesperson added that an investigation has been launched and that anybody with information which may assist officers is asked to come forward.

“Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact 101 or our website’s ‘Tell us Something’ page, quoting log NP-20220125-0443.”
