Police hunt Kilwinning vandals as councillor hits out at spate of incidents

A Kilwinning councillor says authorities are determined to stamp out vandalism in the town.

Donald Reid spoke out this week after yobs struck at the town’s historic abbey grounds.

A wheelie bin was set alight at the Kilwinning Abbey building, causing damage. Yobs also scrawled graffiti at the site and removed retaining wall stones.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident which follows other recent acts of vandalism at Eglinton Park and McGavin Park.

Councillor Reid said authorities are working together to stamp down on the problem.

He said: “The summer holidays tend to bring out a few issues with regards to fire-raising, vandalism and such like.

“Unfortunately, at this moment in time, they all seem to be centred at the Abbey.

“There are still issues and they are very much at the forefront of minds in the council, the fire service and the police. We would encourage anyone to report anything untowards or suspicious.

“There have been instances of vandalism at Eglinton Park and McGavin Park recently too and this kind of behaviour just spoils things for everyone. We want it to stop.”

Any information in relation to the Kilwinning Abbey vandalism - reported on June 17 – can be reported to Kilwinning Locality Police on 101.
