Police have arrested a man after a woman was fatally shot in Mackay on Queensland’s mid-north coast.

Police were called shortly after 4.30pm after reports a woman had been shot. Police found a woman who had died and a man with non-life threatening injuries to his hand.

The hunt for a man involved in the incident ended at about 7.45pm, when the 31-year-old was taken into custody outside a fast-food restaurant along the Bruce Highway in Mackay, Queensland police said.

The man was not physically injured, and was assisting police with investigations.

Police had earlier declared an emergency exclusion zone under the Public Safety Preservation Act at about 5.20pm.

Members of the public were told to avoid the area – which encompasses Robb Place, Paradise Street, Archibald Street, Kindermar Street and Denton Street – and residents were advised to stay indoors. Traffic was diverted from the area.

Queensland police earlier said they wished to thank affected residents for their patience and understanding while the matter was ongoing.
