Police handed extra powers to break up groups and seize property amid fears of disturbance

Police officers in the seaside town of Llantwit Major have been given extra powers to deal with anyone involved in anti-social behaviour on New Year's Day. South Wales Police say patrols have been increased and have urged parents to speak to their children.

The dispersal order, which is granted under the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014, will apply to all, including youths, and will be in place for 12 hours from midday until midnight on Sunday, January 1. The order means that police officers and PCSOs can order anybody who is causing, or is likely to cause harassment, alarm, or distress to leave the area. They will also have the power to seize any property which officers suspect is being used to cause anti-social behaviour.

The order covers the area as shown on this map:

Chief inspector Richard Haines said: “The dispersal order is in place this weekend as a preventative measure. We will have an increased presence in the area and officers won’t hesitate to enforce the extra powers afforded to them in order to keep the community safe. We urge parents and guardians to speak to their young people about not getting involved in anti-social behaviour.”

The Vale of Glamorgan Council's uniformed enforcement service also confirmed that a dispersal notice has been put in place. Anyone with information or concerns can contact South Wales Police quoting refence number 2200435319. You can call police on 101 or email swp101@south-wales.police.uk.
