The remains of a burnt out car have been discovered on a rural South Ayrshire road.

Police have been stationed beside the charred vehicle this afternoon on the A719 between Maybole and Culzean Castle.

Shocked motorists described a strong smell of burning in the air as they passed the vehicle on the roadside, close to the turn-off for the village of Dunure.

Officers from Police Scotland were guarding the remains of the car this afternoon following the extensive damage.

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
