On a recent day in Rome, a pro-Palestinian protest turned chaotic as police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd of about 5,000 people. The demonstration, organized by the Young Palestinians group, was denied permission by Rome police but went ahead nonetheless.
The protesters, chanting slogans and carrying signs condemning the violence in Gaza, attempted to march from the Ostiense-Testaccio neighborhoods to the Colosseum. However, their path was blocked by heavily armored police cars, leading to a standoff.
As tensions escalated, protesters began throwing objects at the police, prompting law enforcement to respond with tear gas and water cannons. The clash resulted in the dispersal of the protest and the arrest of five individuals.
Despite the police intervention, some protesters regrouped on nearby streets, continuing to voice their dissent. Unfortunately, one young woman sustained injuries after being struck on the head by a flying object and required medical attention.
In addition to the on-site arrests, Rome police also conducted checks on 1,600 individuals and arrested 19 people arriving by train at various stations. The specific reasons for these arrests were not disclosed by the authorities.
