Police discover cannabis farm after fire rips through house

Police discovered a cannabis farm after a fire ripped through a house in Bury.

Firefighters rushed to the scene in Chesham Road at about 1.30pm today (Sunday). Crews were alerted after concerned neighbours spotted smoke coming from the roof of a mid-terrace house.

Several homes were evacuated while firefighters tackled the flames. No one is believed to have been injured in the blaze, which started when a cannabis farm caught fire.

The house and two neighbouring properties have been left "uninhabitable" following the incident, firefighters said.

Chesham Road was taped off for several hours as police and firefighters carried out investigations at the scene, near to the junction with Brookshaw Street.

"It was really scary," said Catherine Chukwu, who lives nearby. "There were fumes all over the place.

"Neighbours were knocking on doors telling people to get out of their houses. Everybody went to the other side of the road."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "Around half past one this afternoon, members of the public in the area of Chesham Road in Bury noticed smoke coming from the roof of a mid-terrace house.

"Several 999 calls were placed, and firefighters from Blackley, Rochdale, Heywood, Bury, Whitefield, Ramsbottom, Broughton, Agecroft, and the Technical Rescue Unit from Ashton made their way to the scene on blue lights.

"Firefighters have used specialist equipment to tear away the roof of the home where the fire broke out and have thoroughly searched the premises to ensure that no people are inside the building. There are no reported injuries at this incident.

"The fire has left three properties uninhabitable: the affected property and two neighbouring homes. Colleagues from Bury council, Cadent gas, Electricity Northwest, and Greater Manchester Police are at the scene working together to bring the incident under control."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police added: "At around 2pm today on Sunday 18 December 2022, officers from GMP’s Bury district attended a property on Chesham Road in Bury that had caught fire.

"Officers attended to support Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service after they reported that there was a suspected cannabis farm at the property.

"Officers have located a cannabis farm that had caught fire and as a precaution, neighbouring houses have been evacuated as per standard procedure.

"There is a scene in place at the location with no disruption to the wider area."
