Police Detain 100 At Unauthorized Encampment On Northeastern Campus

Protesters continue to maintain the encampment on the Columbia University campus in New York

On Saturday morning, police detained approximately 100 individuals as officials cleared an unauthorized encampment on Northeastern University's campus in Boston. According to a university spokesperson, the action was taken after concerns arose about the presence of 'professional organizers' among student protesters.

Renata Nyul, the school's vice president for communications, stated that what initially began as a student demonstration had been infiltrated by individuals with no affiliation to Northeastern. Nyul highlighted that the use of virulent antisemitic slurs at the encampment on Friday night was deemed unacceptable and crossed a line.

'We cannot tolerate this kind of hate on our campus,' Nyul emphasized.

Following the incident, approximately 100 people were detained as Northeastern University and local law enforcement worked to clear the site. Nyul clarified that students who could provide a valid Northeastern ID were released but would face disciplinary proceedings within the university. On the other hand, those who refused to disclose their affiliation were subject to arrest.

The university's statement did not specify how many of the detained individuals were ultimately arrested, leaving the exact number unclear.
