Police descend on pub as man suffers facial burns after liquid sprayed in face

A man was left with burns after being sprayed in the face with a liquid during an incident at a pub near Weston. Trouble flared at the Nelsons Arms on Skinners Lane in Churchill on Sunday afternoon (April 16) when a group of four men carrying bottles and armed with baseball bats, walked into the bar.

Liquid from the bottles was sprayed at an unknown male, who sustained a burn to his face. The men, all wearing dark clothing, fled the scene in the direction of the A38, reports Somerset Live.

The disturbing incident happened at 4.45pm as many customers were enjoying a Sunday lunch at the country pub. A crime scene was put in place at the pub following the incident and removed later that day.

Officers have been carrying out house-to-house inquiries in a bid to trace the offender. CCTV footage is also being viewed.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment for his facial injury. It is not known what liquid was in the bottles.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “Emergency services were called to an incident at a pub in North Somerset on Sunday 16 April. Shortly before 4.45pm, four males wearing dark clothing entered the Nelsons Arms, in Skinners Lane, Churchill. Witnesses reported at least one of the men was in possession of a baseball bat, while the men were also carrying bottles containing an unknown substance.

“We understand liquid from the bottles was sprayed, reportedly in the direction of an unknown male, before the offenders left the scene in the direction of the A38. Officers attended but neither the offenders nor victim were sighted.

"We received a telephone call later in the evening reporting a man had sustained a suspected ABH-level burn injury during this incident. The call-handler advised the man should seek medical treatment as a precaution and his family confirmed they would take him to hospital.

“It is understood he was in the pub at the time of the incident, but he was neither one of the offenders nor the unknown male. CCTV and house-to-house enquiries have been carried out and our investigation continues.

"A scene was put in place while enquiries were carried out at the venue, but this was stood down on Sunday night.”

Anyone with information about the incident which could help the police inquiry should call 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5223087808.
