Police continue to question Mason Greenwood on suspicion of rape and assault as Nike suspend sponsorship

Mason Greenwood was still being questioned by police on Tuesday morning on suspicion of rape and assault.

Officers were granted extra time to speak to the Manchester United striker, following his arrest on Sunday.

Sponsors Nike have subsequently suspended his endorsement deal, while United confirmed over the weekend that he would not return to training or play for the club until further notice.

Greenwood was arrested after disturbing images and audio were posted on social media over the weekend.

Images appeared to show a woman bloodied and bruised. Since then, the 20-year-old has seen high-profile footballers unfollow him on social media — among them England team-mates Jack Grealish, Declan Rice and Ben Chilwell.

A host of United’s star players, including Marcus Rashford, Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Pogba and David de Gea do not follow Greenwood on the platform.

In statement on Sunday, United said: “We are aware of images and allegations circulating on social media. We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established. Manchester United do not condone violence of any kind.”

They later confirmed: “Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice.”
