An off-duty police officer has been fined after crashing a car during an illegal street race on the NSW south coast.

The race was cut short when Constable Thomas Leigh Angilley lost control of a BMW and smashed into a power pole in central Nowra.

The uninjured 21-year-old officer was found on Princes Highway near the intersection of Moss Street, a stone's throw from the heart of the coastal city, on November 16, 2023.

Highway patrol officers came across the damaged car at 7.15pm that evening, leading police to investigate events leading up to the crash.

Police spoke to Angilley and an 18-year-old driver who was found in a second vehicle nearby and presumed to be involved in the two-car race.

The officer was charged with street racing in February.

Angilley pleaded guilty in Nowra Local Court on Tuesday to reckless driving, and organising and promoting the event.

The officer has been ordered to pay a total of $1750 in fines and has had his driver's licence suspended for 12 months.

Angilley's employment status is still under review by the police department.
