Police close Dundee country park amid 'incident' days after thugs torch shed

Police have closed a country park near Dundee due to an ongoing "incident" that has seen multiple emergency vehicles descend on the area.

Monikie Country Park is closed to the general public amid reports of a heavy police presence at the entrance. Locals hoping to take in a morning walk have reported being turned away from the entrance by officers standing guard nearby.

Specific details of the incident are unavailable at this time. However, ANGUSalive, the council-linked body responsible for managing the hugely popular green space, has apologised to locals for the inconvenience in a statement posted on social media.

It read: "Due to an incident at Monikie Country Park, the park is temporarily closed. Please accept our apologies if you were planning to visit. We will update when further information is available."

Residents of Monikie, a quiet village to the north-east of Dundee, have reacted with confusion to the activity near the park. Monikie was targeted by firebugs in the early hours of Monday who torched play equipment and a birdwatcher's hide, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

A source told Dundee Live: "At the moment all we know is that the park has had to close due to emergency services in attendance."

Police Scotland was contacted for comment.

Meanwhile, Scottish Youth Parliament member Marcus Flucker has urged ANGUSalive to repair the fire-damaged structures as soon as possible.

He said: "Following this deeply disappointing incident in Monikie Country Park I will be contacting ANGUSalive to request that they replace the play equipment and bird hide due to their importance to local community in Monikie and visitors to the park."
