Hud Hey Road and Roundhill Road were also closed due the incident, police said.

It led to long delays on the A56 and surrounding roads around Haslingden.

The closure was first reported at 11.20am and all lanes reopened at about 12pm.

Lancashire Constabulary confirmed they had received reports of 'concern for welfare', but refused to issue any further information.

A spokesperson for National Highways said: "The A56 is closed in both directions between the A680 (Acre) and A681 (Haslingden) due to a police led incident.

"Lancashire Police in attendance."
