Authorities in Brussels are currently engaged in a search operation after two suspects fled into the city's metro tunnels following a shooting incident at Clemenceau train station. The incident, which occurred at around 6 a.m. local time, did not result in any injuries, according to a spokesperson for the public prosecutor's office.
Video surveillance footage captured the two suspects entering the metro tunnels, prompting a police response to cordon off the area and launch an investigation. Several cartridge cases were discovered at the scene, but no arrests have been made in connection to the shooting. Officials have stated that the incident is not believed to be terror-related.
As a result of the ongoing police operation, Clemenceau and the nearby Midi metro station have been temporarily closed. The closure has impacted travel, particularly for passengers arriving on Eurostar trains from major European cities such as London and Paris.
Brussels, as the host city for institutions like the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), is a key hub for global governance. Reports suggest that the shooting may be linked to drug-related activities, with the suspects allegedly targeting an individual but missing their mark.
Footage from local media shows the suspects entering Clemenceau metro station before discharging their firearms. Subsequent images depict a significant police presence at the station as authorities intensify efforts to locate the suspects.
