Police have launched an investigation after a teenage boy reportedly threw a firework in the car park of Lidl in South Shields.
The incident took place in broad daylight with officers called to the busy supermarket in Laygate at around 1pm on Tuesday, October 25.
It is understood that the teenager threw the firework towards the ground of the car park after staff had asked him to leave the store. The boy then left the scene on foot.
Videos shared on social media of the incident shows a teenager throwing the firework which then made a large bang when it exploded in the car park, leaving customers shaken.
Police have confirmed that they are investigating the incident and urged anyone with information to come forward.
A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “Shortly after 1pm yesterday (Tuesday) police received a report of a disturbance at Lidl on Laygate in South Shields. Officers attended the scene where it was reported by a third party that a male teenager had been asked to leave the store and had thrown what was understood to be a firework on the ground in the car park before leaving the scene on foot.
“Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information can report it to police using the ‘Tell Us Something’ page on our website or by calling 101 quoting log NP-20221025-0433.”
