Police called to Cowdenbeath building fire discover cannabis factory inside

Police called to a fire on Cowdenbeath high street earlier on Tuesday have revealed a cannabis cultivation was found in the blaze-stricken building.

Emergency services were called to a fire above a derelict convenience store in the Fife town at around 9.35am on September 27, with dramatic images showing flames spewing from an upstairs window. However, once inside firefighters discovered what has been described as a "significant" cannabis factory, which has now been seized by police pending further investigation.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “At around 9.50am on Tuesday, 27 September, we were called to provide traffic management while SFRS dealt with a fire on High Street, Cowdenbeath.

"A cannabis cultivation was discovered within a property. Officers will remain on scene while an investigation is carried out.”

No injuries have been reported in the fire and the building is not thought to have been significantly damaged in the inferno.

Cowdenbeath high street remains closed while police carry out investigations, and a single fire engine remains at the scene dampening down the structure.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 9.30am on Tuesday, 27 September to reports of a building fire on Cowdenbeath High Street. Operations Control immediately mobilised four appliances to the scene, where crews are worked to extinguish the fire.

"We have one appliance still on the scene dampening down at the moment. There have been no reported casualties."
