North Wales Live reports that no-one was hurt in the incident, which prompted North Wales Police to clear the jetty.

Gwynedd Council officials were understood to be at the scene as the jetty and "lagoons" - which are magnet for day-trippers - struggled to cope with the sheer volume of people looking to cool off as temperatures soared past 30C in the national park.

One eyewitness said: "There must have been about 200 hundred people on the jetty. It was absolutely rammed.

"At one point the middle seemed to sink under the Llŷn (lake) and then about half of them fell off before it righted itself. Luckily I don't think anyone was hurt.

"Shortly after a lot of police officers came and cleared the jetty. There were people from the council there too in hi-vis to keep an eye on it."

Another eyewitness added: "It's really busy at the lagoons in the summer but I've never seen so many people. This was something else."

North Wales Live approached the police for comment.

Today's temperatures were also unprecedented with Hawarden in Flintshire a record-breaking 37.1C - the hottest day ever in Wales. The previous record of 35.2C, also set in the same place, had stood since 1990.

Many people took to the beach in pursuit of a sea breeze but even popular beauty spots like Colwyn Bay, St Asaph and Talacre were relatively quiet with some seeking a respite from the sun in the shade. The extreme heatwave affected almost every part of the UK.

A rare amber weather warning was issued by the Met Office covering the whole of Wales A red weather warning for heat was issued across parts of England.
