Police blocked the M4 at rush hour to rescue a cat

A major operation was launched during rush on Wednesday to rescue a cat from the busy M4.

Traffic Wales, which monitors roads across the country, shared a picture of a rolling road block that was set up on the motorway, near Newport, so the feline could be picked up safely.

Motorists were held back on the westbound carriageway between junction 24A Grove Park to junction 26 Malpas so the animal could be "retrieved".

It happened just before 8am and it was not long before all lanes re-opened, but some delays remained.

Traffic monitoring system Inrix reported: "There was a rolling road block to remove the cat safely. There were delays, but all lanes have re-opened."

Just after 8am, Traffic Wales said: "Cat safely removed from the road. Traffic remains heavy."
