A woman whose body was found in an apartment in Sydney’s eastern suburbs may have died from an accidental fall, with police releasing her former boyfriend from custody.

The body of a 38-year-old woman was discovered in a Bondi Beach apartment on O'Brien Street with severe and suspicious injuries to her face about 5am on Thursday morning.

Paramedics attempted to revive her but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman's former boyfriend was taken into custody at Waverley Police Station for questioning but was released without charge about 12pm.

Police said there are no suspects in the case and are now investigating the possibility that the woman's death was caused by an accidental fall.

US tourist Amy Patel arrived for a holiday in Bondi last week and was staying in the apartment complex.

The 40-year-old told the ABC yesterday she was shocked to hear a woman's body had been found in the building.

"This is my first time visiting Sydney and it's a scary thing to hear," Ms Patel said.

"It's really sad to hear somebody passed away."

A report will be prepared for the Coroner and a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
