Police arrest teenager as three men die in tragic M606 van and taxi crash

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after three people died in a crash on the M606 on Monday night (June 13).

A Ford Transit van failed to stop for a marked roads police unit before driving the wrong way on the southbound M606 from Chain Bar roundabout towards Bradford, where it crashed into a taxi at around 10.45pm. The case was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as a police car was in the vicinity of the crash, reports YorkshireLive .

The van, which the police suspect was stolen, crashed into a taxi while travelling the wrong way. Earlier today (June 14), the police shared that there were five casualties in total.

The IOPC has confirmed the male driver of the taxi, aged 28, a passenger in the taxi, aged 48, and a 18-year-old passenger in the van have since died. A 15-year-old boy was also arrested by West Yorkshire Police on the suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The 15-year-old boy - and another 17-year-old boy who was a passenger in the van - remain in hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries.

The IOPC has said their investigators have been on the scene and are currently collecting evidence. The current evidence suggests the police did not follow the van the wrong way onto the motorway.

IOPC Regional Director Thea Walton said: “This was a tragic incident that has resulted in three people losing their lives. Our thoughts are with all those affected.

“We understand this will have caused considerable concern in the community and I would like to reassure people that there will be a thorough, independent investigation to understand exactly what has happened. We will be in contact with the families as soon as possible to explain our role and how our inquiries will progress.”
