Police have charged six teenagers with murder over the fatal stabbing of 16-year-old Declan Cutler in Melbourne's north.

Emergency services tried to assist the injured teenager in the early hours of Sunday, March 13, but he died of his injuries.

Six boys aged between 13 and 17 will face a children's court today charged with murder.

A 17-year-old girl was also arrested yesterday, but has been released without charge.

Crime Command Assistant Commissioner Bob Hill labelled the alleged assault on Declan as a "profoundly violent criminal act", described by police as "one of the most vicious and brutal attacks they have ever investigated".

He described the effect the death of the teenager had on his family.

"It's every parent's worst nightmare, having their teenage child leave the house for a night out with friends and never returning. However, this is exactly what happened on this occasion," he said.

"There are so many impacted people whose lives have been changed forever by what happened the night Declan died, most of all his family."

Witnesses or others with any information that may assist the investigation are being encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
