Police have made an arrest over a stabbing on a busy suburban street that killed a beloved local rugby league player.
On Monday, 32-year-old Sitaleki Filihiahekava was attacked on Marrickville Rd at Marrickville in Sydney's inner west, before dying at the scene.
Police initially struggled to identify a person who was spotted on CCTV fleeing down a nearby street after the attack.
And after inquiries, authorities announced on Wednesday night a 31-year-old man had been arrested in Concord over the incident.
Police said the arrested man, who was yet to be charged with any offence, was taken into custody and was assisting them with their inquiries.
The busy main street is lined with restaurants, some of which had to close their doors for the night after the attack.
The incident happened a few hundred metres along the road from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's electorate office.
Mr Filihiahekava was dining with several others at one of the restaurants before he was stabbed.
He had played in a premiership at the Mascot Juniors Rugby League club a fortnight before the attack.
"'Leki' was a well liked and respected integral member of our A reserve grade premiership team two weeks ago where he performed admirably," club president Frank Cookson wrote on social media.
"RIP Leki your happy, friendly personality will be greatly missed."
Speaking the morning after the incident, police said the attack was not random and the community should not be worried.
