Police are appealing for witnesses after a 'wilful' fire destroyed an electrical sub-station in Kilmarnock. Officers discovered the blaze on Knockinlaw Mount at around 10.40pm on Monday, 21 November, while on routine patrol.
Around 30 residents were evacuated to nearby Onthank Primary School and local hotels as a precaution due to concerns over the fire’s proximity to gas lines. They have since been allowed to return to their homes.
Emergency services spent most of the night at the scene as the area was cordoned off while the blaze was brought under control. Police have today launched an investigation into the fire which they describe as 'wilful.'
Officers are asking anyone who was in the area between 10 pm and 10.40 pm and seen anyone acting suspiciously to come forward and assist with their enquiries. They are also asking motorists to check dashcam footage.
Detective Sergeant Jamie Carruth of Kilmarnock Police Station said: “Following initial enquiries, the fire is being treated as wilful and an investigation is ongoing.
“I would appeal to anyone who was in the area on Monday evening between 10pm and 10.40pm who witnessed anything suspicious. We are also keen to obtain any dashcam from motorists driving in this area between those times, or anyone with personal footage.
“There are increased police patrols in the area to provide public reassurance and anyone with concerns should speak to officers. I would urge anyone with information on this crime to contact 101 with reference 3630 of 21 November.
