Police have launched an investigation and are appealing for witnesses following a serious crash on the M1. It comes after a car left the northbound carriageway and collided with a tree between junctions 21a and 22, near Leicester.

The incident happened shortly before 10.45am on Sunday morning (May 8). The occupants of the black Ford Mondeo– a driver and a passenger – were taken to hospital for treatment.

The passenger – a woman – is in a life-threatening condition. The driver’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Leicestershire Police confirmed.

The M1 was shut in both directions but all lanes have reopened on both carriageways. Drivers had been asked to divert. Detectives have launched an appeal for any witnesses to come forward as part of their ongoing investigation.

Detective Constable Charlotte Wright, from the force’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, SCIU, said: “Our investigation into this incident is continuing and I would like to thank motorists for their patience while we carry out further enquiries.

“I am keen to speak to anyone who was travelling on the motorway this morning and saw the collision occur. I am also particularly keen to speak to anyone with a dashcam in their vehicle who has not yet come forward or who saw the black Ford Mondeo prior to the collision occurring. Any information you have could help.” Anyone with information is asked to contact Leicestershire Police via the force website, quoting incident 213 of May 8. Alternatively call 101.
