Police have launched an internal probe after two people died in a head-on car crash near the border of NSW and Victoria.

Emergency crews were called to Stony Creek Road at Kyalite, on the NSW side of the border, about 11.20am on Thursday and found a utility and a small truck had collided head-on.

The two drivers were the only occupants in the vehicles and neither could be revived by paramedics at the scene.

One of the drivers was thought to have been visited by police officers earlier on Thursday, when a search warrant was conducted at a house in nearby Goodnight.

A critical incident investigation has been launched by a Riverina Police District team, who will look into the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the actions of officers in its lead-up.

The investigation will also be subject to an independent review and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
