Pokemon Unite is the franchise's first entry into the MOBA scene and pits players' favorite pocket monsters against one another in a Dota-style arena.
This beginner's tips and tricks guide will help newcomers understand the basics and what they need to improve on to advance their ranks. The first thing to know is that Pokemon Unite works a little bit differently with other MOBAs, some of which we'll cover in this article.
Basic and Boosted Attacks
In Pokemon Unite, every Pokemon is capable of performing a Basic Attack, of which there are two types. The first one is Melee, which forces you to get in close to an opponent before striking them.
The second is Ranged, which allows you to attack an opposing Pokemon from a distance without having to get close and personal.
Using certain Pokemon, after you land consecutive Basic Attacks, you will be able to use a much more powerful Boosted Attack, according to IGN.
These Boosted Attacks have a secondary effect that varies from Pokemon to Pokemon and includes slowing enemy movement speed, pulling enemies toward you, paralysis, area-of-effect damage, and others.
Master Movement
The map in Pokemon Unite is rather big and getting from one end to the other takes some time especially if you plan to complete various objectives along the way. There are three basic strategies to keep in mind for this.
The first is teleporting back to base regularly as, on top of regenerating your HP, this also gives you a burst of movement speed when you leave the area. This would help in getting to where you want to go faster.
Second, use team paths that are highlighted with your team's color so that you get constant movement speed. However, you should be aware of your surroundings so that you can avoid ending up in your enemy's highlighted path, which will slow you down instead.
Lastly, at the five-minute mark during 10-minute matches, the Super Jump becomes available which lets you choose which distance they will shoot you out towards.
This is a quick way of protecting objectives, rushing to help allies, and preparing for Zapdos in the Central Area.
Picking the Right Pokemon
Pokemon Unite has categories for its Pokemon that vary depending on what their specialization is for the match.
These are All-Rounder, Attacker, Defender, Speedster, and Supporter. For example, Speedsters excel in hunting down lone Pokemon and taking them down due to their high mobility, said YugaTech.
Knowing which type of Pokemon you need for your team or your composition is crucial to winning team battles. You can also try out various different types to know which one you are actually comfortable with using.
Held Items and Battle Items
There are a variety of items that players can equip in Pokemon Unite, such as Held Items that provide passive bonuses such as extra stats or effects. These range from increased critical hit rate, to more health, and even damage reduction.
You can have up to three held items equipped at any time, which gives you some level of freedom to mix and match your items. On the other hand, Battle Items can be activated at any point to provide various benefits.
These range from temporary stat boosts to giving you access to additional moves such as the slowing cloud from Slow Smoke. However, you can only equip one Battle Item at any time, according to OneEsports.
