Pointless contestants 'banned' from wearing certain clothes on hit BBC quiz show

Pointless contestants have opened up about what it's been like to appear on the show - including the surprising revelation that they're banned from wearing certain clothes.

Hosted by Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman launched in 2009, the BBC quiz has grown to become a much-loved show as contestants battle to find the most obscure answer.

Beginning with four teams of two, the pairs tackle rounds of general knowledge questions until one is left.

In order to win the pot of cash, the pair who have made it to the final must retrieve a pointless answer.

Speaking about what it had been like to take part on the show, Bethan Thomas told The Sun that she had been surprised by the rules determining what she could and couldn't win.

Bethan, 31, who appeared on the show in 2016, said: "I wear quite a lot of black or sequins and they were like, 'No you can't wear that, can't wear spots'.

"So I went for a floral number and my friend did too. When we were on, someone told us we looked like Kew Gardens."

She also explained how they were given "TV make-up", which meant that she was "very heavily contoured".

Filming also took much longer than she initially believed it would be and that they were there "all day".

Prior to appearing on TV, hopefuls need to attend group interviews and Bethan explained that they were invited to try out for the show.

“They made us play games - it felt like I was at a comedy improvisation thing, it was like they were trying to get us to be funny and I felt really under pressure," she said. "“You could see a lot of people really trying to crack a few jokes and pull a few faces to get on."

Opening up about what hosts Richard and Alexander were like behind the scenes, she said: "They come up and talk to you, do a bit of preamble and make you feel comfortable.

“Richard said he has family in Brighton, so I was telling him about that. They were really nice. I was a bit starstruck, actually.”
