Podcast: Bill Belichick isn’t changing, and neither are the Patriots

Coach Bill Belichick has the New England Patriots stuck on a hamster wheel going nowhere fast. He pedaled the team from playoff contention in 2021 to back-to-back losing seasons and a 2-9 record in 2023.

And there’s no hope of things getting better under his watch.

Belichick’s methodology of team-building is coming undone at the seams as old and outdated to the point where he got circles ran on him by his old pupil, Brian Daboll, and an undrafted rookie quarterback signed off the streets last week.

The New York Giants only needed 10 points to beat the Patriots, which is all the Indianapolis Colts needed as well in Week 10. Belichick’s defense once again showed up to play, but his offense looked like a circus.

Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe split reps at quarterback, and rookie kicker Chad Ryland, who Belichick selected in the fourth-round of the 2023 NFL draft, whiffed on a 35-yard goal. This follows a year after Belichick hired a defensive coordinator to call the offensive plays and coach the offensive line.

The circus has kept on spinning.

In this week’s episode of the Patriots Wire Podcast, Ryan O’Leary and I talk about Belichick’s unwillingness to change, while also delving into the quarterback situation in New England and previewing Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Does Belichick have it in him to change? Who should the Patriots start at quarterback on Sunday? How many more games could the team win the rest of the way?
