'Pocket-rocket' Segecic can push Sydney to ACL2 final

Sydney FC captain Rhyan Grant has described Adrian Segecic's run of form as "frightening" as the in-form playmaker looks to power his club into a home final of the Asian Champions League Two.

Segecic has made a habit of scoring late in Sydney's A-League Men season as well as during their ACL2 campaign, which continues with Wednesday night's semi-final first-leg away to Singaporean outfit Lion City Sailors.

The 20-year-old has scored 17 goals this season across all competitions, with the Sydney academy product starting in just 16 games.

Segecic sealed a 94th-minute winner against Adelaide on Saturday and Grant would love to see the talented youngster help Sydney take control of the tie ahead of the home leg on Wednesday, April 16.

"Certainly I've never seen something like it in terms of someone having such an impact consistently off the bench," Grant told AAP.

"Obviously, you have those players over the years that come on and always make a difference.

"But the amount of times Sega has either scored a goal or created a goal or created a chance off the bench has been frightening to be honest - it's such a good asset to have.

"He's obviously in rich form at the minute and hopefully that continues for the next couple weeks.

"He's a little pocket rocket, who looks after himself, so it's good to see him rewarded with some good performances … he has a big future."

If they win across the two legs, Sydney would host the one-off final at Allianz Stadium on May 18 against the winners of the west Asian semi-final between UAE side Sharjah and Saudi outfit Al Taawoun.

Standing in the way of Sydney are Lion City Sailors, who qualified for the semi-final on a technicality when quarter-final opponents Sanfreece Hiroshima fielded an ineligible player in ex-Macarthur captain Valere Germain.

The Singaporean side has a familiar face in Socceroos defender Bailey Wright.

Grant, who has developed into a central defender under Ufuk Talay, will likely partner Alex Popovic in the heart of the Sydney defence with namesake Alex Grant heading for scans on a calf injury picked up in the win over Adelaide.

"He (Alex Grant) is obviously a big loss," Grant said.

"He's come in and done really well for us in a short period.

"For him to go off early in Adelaide and then be unavailable for this game is a bit of a hit."
