Plumes of smoke seen over Salford as crews tackle fire at scrap yard

Huge plumes of smoke were seen over Salford as fire crews tackled a blaze at a scrap yard this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Blackfriars Road, Lower Broughton, shortly before 3pm today (Sunday).

Footage shared on social media showed large plumes of smoke billowing from the fire, which involved waste materials.

Firefighters from Salford and Manchester Central fire stations raced to the scene behind the old Victoria Theatre. Crews brought the flames under control and left the area about half an hour after arriving.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At 2:57pm on Sunday 13 November two fire engines from Salford and Manchester Central fire stations attended a fire on Blackfriars Road, Salford.

“The fire involved waste material at a scrap yard. Firefighters used one breathing apparatus and one hose reel to extinguish the fire. Crews were in attendance for approximately half an hour.”
