Plumes of smoke seen over Heywood as crews tackle huge fire at scrap yard

Huge plumes of smoke were seen clouding over Heywood on Monday evening (June 20) after a fire broke out at a scrap yard. Crews from the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service were seen tackling the blaze among materials off Peel Lane.

Dramatic pictures appear to show wooden pallets on fire at the wasteland, surrounded by various other materials including metal skips and tyres. How the flames broke out has not been confirmed at this time.

People on a local social media group reported seeing the thick clouds of smoke billowing over the town, in the Rochdale borough, from a distance and through neighbouring streets as the fire brigade continued to use their safety jets to try and dampen the blaze.
