An investigation is under way after a Gateshead family were burgled with thieves taking a number of sentimental items.

It was reported that a male offender entered an address on Silverdale Drive, in the Winlaton area, after smashing the patio door sometime between between 4.10pm and 4.40pm on July 7.

Once inside, the man stole jewellery, a number of memorial £5 coins and a medal belonging to the victim’s father, commemorating his long service while working on ship.
