Police are appealing for help to identify a man with an elaborate tattoo involved in a fiery crash on Sydney Harbour Bridge that caused peak-hour traffic chaos.
A stolen Toyota Kluger collided head-on with a van just after 7am on Monday, flipping the SUV onto its roof before exploding into flames.
The impact caused the van to crash into another car and three people were injured.
The ensuing carnage closed the bridge to traffic for about three hours as bystanders rushed to help free drivers trapped in their vehicles.
The SUV driver, a man believed to be in his 20s or 30s, suffered serious, non-life threatening head injuries and was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital.
Superintendent Rohan Cramsie said early investigations suggested the man carjacked the SUV after a scuffle with the owner in Sydney's CBD.
The man has not been identified and remains under guard in hospital.
He has not spoken with police due to his injuries.
Police have released images of a distinctive tattoo on the man's hand and urged anyone who can identify him to contact Sydney City Police or Crime Stoppers.
The tattoo is of an eye with a wavy-line pattern extending out across his wrist and fingers.
Police described him as about 175cm tall and said he was wearing a black hooded jacket and red shorts at the time of the crash.
