The next generation of gaming is almost here, as Sony is gearing up to release its newest virtual reality headset. The PlayStation VR 2 will drop later this month, allowing gamers to fully immerse themselves in a host of new adventures.
A huge leap forward in gaming technology, the PS VR2 will drop gamers into worlds that look and feel real, letting them feel like they are well and truly in the game. It is the second version of Sony’s virtual reality gaming headset, following the release of PlayStation VR in 2016.
The original PS VR was well received upon its release, and had sold five million units as of January 2020, according to market and consumer data platform Statista. Its successor, the VR2, has been six years in the making, developed alongside the PlayStation 5, which was released in November 2020.

What games will be available for PlayStation VR2?
Sony has confirmed that more than 20 games are currently in development for PS VR2, while revealing the lineup of games that will be released in its launch window. They include action-adventure Horizon Call of the Mountain – a spin-off from the Horizon franchise – the horror shooter The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR, and Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge.
Elsewhere on the lineup is animated survival adventure Jurassic World Aftermath – set between the Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom films – and post-apocalyptic shooter After the Fall. Gamers with PS VR editions of Resident Evil Village and No Man’s Sky can upgrade the games for use with VR2 at no extra cost, according to the PlayStation website.
What are the PlayStation VR2’s tech specifications?
The new PS VR2 headset has impressive 4K HDR visuals, with its OLED display boasting a resolution of 2000 x 2040 per eye. It allows gamers to feel real sensations and emotions with its eye tracking – which detects the motion of a player’s eyes with four embedded cameras and an infrared camera for each eye – allowing for heightened emotional response and enhanced expression when meeting other players during online gaming.
Its headset feedback – created by a single built-in motor – lets gamers feel subtle, responsive vibrations at key moments while gaming, while its 3D audio lets players feel as if they are well and truly inside a virtual world. VR2 users will be fully immersed in the gaming experience thanks to its 110-degree field of view and advanced graphical rendering when used with compatible games.
Both the VR2 headset and the two controllers utilise the six-axis motion sensing system, while the headset has controller tracking and an infrared camera for tracking each eye.
Will PlayStation VR2 be compatible with PlayStation 4?
PlayStation VR2 will only work with PlayStation 5 consoles. The original PlayStation VR is compatible with PS4 consoles, and with PS5 consoles by using the PlayStation Camera adaptor, which is available for PS VR owners for no extra cost.
Original PlayStation VR games are also not compatible with PS VR2.
