Players and staff - everyone who has left Nottingham Forest since the end of last season

An important summer window is yet to really get going at Nottingham Forest as the club wait to make their first signing.

However, plenty of work has been going on behind the scenes. And there is a long way to go before there is any cause for panic.

If they are to progress in the Premier League, the Reds know they need to get their business right. This year, it will be about quality over quantity.

There will be nowhere near the same number of additions as 12 months ago, when 22 new faces came through the doors in preparation for the step up in divisions. But Forest do need to strengthen in a number of areas and significant changes will still be made to the squad - which also means some departures.

Numbers need to be trimmed. The Reds were already over their 25-man squad limit, and that is without those who have returned - or could still return - from loan spells. Space must be made for any arrivals, too.

As is the case with bringing players in, so the main work of overseeing exits is also yet to begin. But a start was made last month with the release of those coming to the end of their contracts.

Jesse Lingard, Jack Colback, Jordan Smith, Andre Ayew, Lyle Taylor and Cafu were all let go, while the loans of Keylor Navas, Dean Henderson and Renan Lodi came to an end. Academy players Billy Fewster, Alex Gibson-Hammond, Ryan Hammond, Nicky Hogarth, Adnan Kanuric and Lewis Salmon also departed.

Prior to the publication of the retained list, there had already been one sale. Striker Will Swan moved to Mansfield Town on a permanent basis for an undisclosed fee, following a successful loan spell.

Off the pitch there have been changes, too. Forest are yet to announce the departure of Gary Brazil as academy chief after more than a decade at the club, following the expiration of his contract. Meanwhile, The Athletic reported Lee Charnley was told his services were no longer required, having been brought in on a consultancy basis as the Reds prepared for life in the Premier League.

As part of the backroom shake-up, assistant academy manager Chris McGuane is said to have been offered a promotion to academy manager. And confirmation is awaited over the arrival of Craig Mullholland in a wide-ranging role as he links up again with chief football officer Ross Wilson, with the pair having worked together at Rangers.

This week has, however, seen the announcement of something of a surprise arrival behind the scenes. Steven Reid has returned as a first-team coach, having left the City Ground to pursue a new challenge last summer.
