Platinum Jubilee Red Arrows flypast: the route, timings and where to watch on TV

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will be marked by a spectacular flypast this Bank Holiday weekend, as the famous Red Arrows soar over Buckingham Palace.

Platinum Jubilee festivities will be ongoing all weekend, with an extended four-day Bank Holiday weekend to mark the occasion. The flypast will involve scores of aircraft both past and present, including the iconic Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane.

The flypast will head over much of eastern and south-eastern England, before climaxing by swooping down and flying over the Palace itself. But when is the Platinum Jubilee flypast - and where can you watch it?

When is the Platinum Jubilee RAF flypast?

The Platinum Jubilee flypast will take place on Thursday, June 2nd. Its arrival over Buckingham Palace on Thursday afternoon will be timed to coincide with the Queen’s Birthday Parade, Trooping the Colour, and the Royal Family’s appearance on the balcony.

What’s the route of the RAF flypast?

According to Military Airshows, the flypast is expected to start over The Wash in East Anglia at around 11.45am. The aircraft will then perform a circuit over the North Sea before flying south from the north-western edge of East Anglia at approximately 12.15pm.

After that, the aircraft will fly over Swaffham and Thetford before passing over Ipswich and Colchester on their way towards London. They are expected to appear over the centre of the capital between 12.40pm and 1.15pm.

They are expected to get into formation over the east London districts of Stratford and Shoreditch before flying over Buckingham Palace at about 1pm. They will then break their formation and fly over south London until about 1.30pm.

Following their flight over London, the aircraft will pass over western Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Buckinghamshire. All timings are approximate and subject to change as weather conditions and other factors may affect the flypast.

Which aircraft are taking part in the flypast?

Some 70 military aircraft are set to take part in the Platinum Jubilee flypast, including the Red Arrows. The Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane and Avro Lancaster bomber will also participate as part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Where to watch the Jubilee flypast

Coverage of Trooping the Colour - which is expected to include the Jubilee flypast as it passes over Buckingham Palace - will begin on BBC One at 10am on Thursday. Huw Edwards, Kirsty Young and JJ Chalmers will host the programme.

Those who live along the intended route of the flypast will be able to look up and see it flying overhead in person. Most of London, except for its northernmost suburbs, should be able to see the aircraft as they pass.
