Plant-based bakery in Ayr 'blown away' after top award win

A plant-based bakery in Ayr have shared of their delight at scooping a top gong.

Barefaced Food, on Ayr’s North Harbour Industrial Estate, won the regional best bakery award at the Scottish Business Awards last week.

The family-run bakery and coffee house said the win was ‘even more special’ as their cake offerings — including red velvet cupcakes, Biscoff brownies and empire biscuits — are entirely plant based, making them free from traditional baking ingredients like eggs.

Other baked goods include sourdough bread for gourmet sandwiches or their popular ‘open toasts’, which come in a range of savoury or sweet options.

Barefaced Food owner Catherine Lawson, from Ayr, said the team found out they had made the finals in July — the same month they marked their first birthday in business.

Catherine, son Rory Lawson and his partner Denise Heron attended the regional awards night at the Park Hotel in Kilmarnock on Sunday, September 4.

Catherine said: “We felt completely blown away by the result — we really hadn’t anticipate the win — we were just over the moon to have got to the final.

“What makes the award so incredibly special to us is the fact that it’s mainly based on customer votes.

“It’s quite emotional when you realise just how much support you have from your customers and how much they want you to succeed.

“We’ve said before how lucky we are- we have amazing customers and we’re incredibly grateful to them for coming on this business journey with us and cheering us on all of the way.

“All of our cakes are plant-based and so to win a best bakery award, in a category which includes all kinds of bakeries, makes it even more special.

“We’ve worked hard to develop a range of plant-based cakes which don’t compromise on taste, texture or appearance and this award recognises that we’ve achieved this and that our customers love what they eat when they visit us.

“It makes all the early starts worthwhile!”

Catherine added that the team are now looking to expand their bakery range.
