Plans unveiled to transform derelict Gartloch Hospital into flats

Plans have been put forward to transform a former Victorian hospital into a block of flats.

Gartloch Hospital in the east end of the city was built in the 1880s by the Glasgow District Lunacy Board.

The building was intended to house pauper lunatics and within a year of opening, in 1896, the hospital had almost 500 patients.

Gartloch Hospital was used as a sanatorium for tuberculosis sufferers and an emergency hospital until the end of the Second World War, when it reverted back to a mental hospital.

The hospital closed its doors for the final time in 1996 and has been derelict ever since and fallen into a state of decay.

Now, however, an application has been put forward to turn the A listed building into a block of 12 flats.

Many of the surrounding buildings in the complex have already been converted into homes, however the main building has so far remained untouched.

The application, which will go in front of Glasgow City Council's planning committee, was made by ZM Architecture on behalf of New City Vision.

It proposes to both convert and conserve the building with plans including the addition of 15 parking spaces for the building's residents.
