A derelict building in Dumfries High Street could be turned into a Robert Burns museum and international visitor centre.
A planning application has been submitted to the council to revamp the bakehouse building on Globe Close, next to the Globe Inn.
Robert Burns’ Globe Inn Ltd recently secured the purchase of the building and is proposing to transform it into a museum, exhibition and conference centre which they say, will “form the heart of the Dumfries Burns’ quarter”.
The planning application states that the project “aims to bring local, national and international visitors to Dumfries town centre building on the legacy of Scotland’s national poet Robert Burns”.
It added: “This investment will not only act as a catalyst for Burns enthusiasts visiting the area but will also bring much needed footfall to Dumfries town centre and Dumfries and Galloway”.
The historic Globe Inn next door is home of the Burns Room and Howff Club and has long been recognised as an important venue associated with Robert Burns’ time in Dumfries.
The application states: “These will be a massive improvement from what has been present on the site for many decades.”
