Plans to shut North Strand recycling centre shelved after successful local campaign

Plans to shut a popular recycling centre in North Strand have been shelved following a successful campaign by local representatives on the foot of public concern.

The Shamrock Terrace Recycling Centre's future was put into question last February when plans were put into place to "downgrade" the centre. But on the foot of concerns raised by councillors on Dublin City Council, the council has said the plans are being "reviewed".

Independent councillor Nial Ring has been campaigning about the facility's downgrade since rumours came to light about its potential closure. He has said that the decision by Dublin City Council is an indication that the plans will ultimately be abandoned.

He said: "It now seems extremely likely that the attempt to downgrade the services being provided at the widely used Shamrock Terrace Recycling Centre, North Strand, will be abandoned. This is a very encouraging reply and "review" in this case means the decision will [likely] be reversed and the plan abandoned.

“I first became aware of the attempt by Dublin City Council to close down the Shamrock Terrace Recycling Centre last February when talking to the employees there, who had heard some “rumours” to that effect. Subsequently, the rumour mill went into overdrive and I received calls from constituents who had heard that the centre was to close entirely.

“Up to last night’s written answer from the Chief Executive the status of the centre was still unclear, despite my attempts to get clarification on this issue. The vagueness of the answers and reports given to me were unsatisfactory.

“I was eventually compelled to ask the Chief Executive to intervene as the position of myself and my fellow councillors on this issue was very clear and I was determined to ensure that this recycling centre be retained with its current services. I pointed out that the questions, motions et cetera reflected the will of the local community, the wider Northside Community and the clear and unambiguous position of myself and my fellow local councillors.

“Thankfully, the Chief Executive has taken on board all our concerns and I am fully confident that the “review” will conclude and confirm that the services at Shamrock Terrace Recycling Centre will continue unchanged."
