A former nightclub that was the place to be among the rich and famous is set to become a bar — and improve a public square along with it.
Greengate Square, on Chapel Street, currently houses several commercial units inside railway arches. Previously, they were home to the Bijou nightclub, before it closed down.
Once the haunt of some of the city’s most rich and famous, until recently it housed an escape room. Previous guests at the spot include the Real Housewives of Cheshire , Big Brother winners — and even Justin Bieber .
However, new plans from D&A Investments Ltd show ambitions to revitalise the arches as a bar and improve the forgotten Greengate Square outside it. The latest documents, submitted to Salford City Council, show how the area could change.
“Prior to the applicant taking occupancy of the premises in October 2008, the upper ground floor had kitchens and operated as a restaurant, therefore reverting back to this use is not expected to be a concern,” a letter to Salford council planners said.
“The Greengate Square elevation is to be upgraded with artificial green walls to the entire upper section of the arch infills, cladding to the lower level and now a new glazed public entrance for the bar to the right-hand arch. The new repurposed entrance to the bar will create a relationship between Greengate square, utilising the public space and would complement and enhance the ongoing regeneration of the immediate and wider area.
“The application submitted originally for the public realm always featured outdoor seating from the venue onto the square and this is something we wish to incorporate.” Documents also suggest that the space will take design cues from green walls seen on the side of the Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink tram stop.
