Plans to replace busy Newport city centre roundabout with traffic lights and new junction

Plans to get rid of a busy city centre roundabout and replace it with a traffic light-controlled junction are being explored.

Transport for Wales (TfW) is undertaking a feasibility study on improvements to the Old Green roundabout in Newport.

According to plans submitted to Newport City Council planners earlier this month the roundabout, which connects with Newport Bridge and the Queensway, would be replaced with a traffic light-controlled junction and the roads would be extended into the existing central open roundabout area.

The existing taxi interchange at the railway station would also be modified to provide a drive-in/drive-out system for buses with dedicated bus lanes on Queensway. The new junction layout would be created by new sections of elevated highway in the centre of the roundabout.

According to an environmental impact assessment letter submitted by TfW, it is anticipated that the plans would lead to "increased traffic flows with potential impacts on the local highway network over the construction period" if they go ahead.

Any noise impact from the development is "not anticipated to be significant" but an archaeological assessment is likely to be carried out before the plans are given approval.

The A4042 which runs underneath the roundabout would be unaffected by the plans, which are now with planners to determine their feasibility and remain at an early stage.
