Plans to open new Celtic Manor hotel in Newport next year

The five-star Celtic Manor Resort in Newport has confirmed it will open a new hotel in the city next year.

The Tŷ Hotel Newport will be located in Langstone on the east side of the city, next to the Coldra Court Hotel by Celtic Manor - also owned by parent company Celtic Manor Collection - and will open in autumn 2023.

The project was originally announced back in August 2019, when work began on the site, just a few minutes away from Celtic Manor itself. It was due to open in the autumn of 2020, but has been beset with delays due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Like many, the Celtic Collection has been impacted by the pandemic, reporting a pre-tax loss of almost £13m last year and announcing hundreds of job cuts in July 2020. More recently it held recruitment days for over 300 jobs back in September 2021 and leisure and hospitality continue to recover from the impact of Covid-19.

At the time, Russell Phillips, vice-president, facilities and development, of the Celtic Collection said the new hotel would "bring more employment and visitors to the city of Newport and help the area address a shortfall in the accommodation needs of conferences and events being held at ICC Wales.

"An essential, mid-range hotel also helps us offer a different kind of accommodation for people attending and working on these events as well as those visiting the city and region for other purposes," he added.

But the resort has now confirmed that work on the hotel - which will have 150 bedrooms and a concept restaurant and is expected to create more than 30 new jobs - will resume in January next year ahead of an autumn 2023 opening date.

It is the second major hotel development in Newport in recent years, with the 15-storey, 130-bed Mercure Newport set to finally open in the city centre in the coming months.

That project, part of a £12 million redevelopment of Newport's tallest building Chartist Tower, has also been hit with pandemic-related delays, having originally been slated to open in April 2020.

Meanwhile, a host of traders have been announced this week for the multi-million pound revamp of Newport's indoor market, which will be opening in March. You can read more about that here.

A new 100-bed waterfront hotel in Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, also by the Celtic Manor's parent company, is on track for completion in spring 2022.
